Meet Amy Vega
Born and raised in Oxnard, Amy began teaching Water Aerobics at the age of 18. Having struggled with her fluctuating weight all her life, Amy began taking classes and later getting her certification.
Amy first worked as an instructor almost 40 years ago at the Embassy Suites (now Zachari Dunes at Mandalay Bay) in Oxnard. She would later move her classes to the Oxnard High School Aquatic Center where she has been an instructor for over 25 years. Amy loves instructing water aerobics whether it be with her mermaids at Oxnard High School or her regulars at the Kimball Aquatic Center. Most days, you will find her near or in the pool!
What is Deep Water water aerobics?
Deep water water aerobics is a low-impact workout performed in the deep end of a pool, where participants use buoyancy to perform exercises with a flotation belt, engaging more muscle groups and increasing the intensity of the cardiovascular workout.

HONORING OUR MERMAIDS

The mermaids were a group of “regulars” who were actively participating in water aerobics taught by Amy. Each month the ladies would gather for a lunch to celebrate their birthdays.
We honor and remember our original mermaids. They will always be in our hearts and memories.

Continuing on the legacy of the original Mermaids.
